Jeffrey Stout entered the Religion Department’s doctoral program in 1972, joined the faculty in 1975, and retired from classroom teaching in 2018. His books are The Flight from Authority (1981), Ethics after Babel (1988), Democracy and Tradition (2004), and Blessed Are the Organized (2010). The second and third of these received the Award for Excellence from the American Academy of Religion, a professional society for which he served as president in 2007. Stout co-edited the Series on Religion and Critical Thought for Cambridge University Press and served for many years as a contributing or associate editor of the Journal of Religious Ethics. He gave a series of six Gifford Lectures at Edinburgh University in 2017, and is currently expanding them into a book tentatively entitled, “A Political History of Religion.”
