Bas Tönissen
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Bas Tönissen is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Philosophy and Religion at Princeton University. His research interests include Immanuel Kant, early modern philosophy, and moral psychology. His current projects focus on solving central puzzles in Kant’s moral psychology by reexamining its metaphysical and theological underpinnings. He is especially interested in the concept of ‘heart’, by which Kant connects our moral commitments to our sensible natures and thereby makes us responsible for our own motivations. In a separate project, he aims to show more generally how the rich conceptions of ‘heart’ found in various religious and philosophical traditions can inform contemporary moral psychology. Bas holds a PhD from UC San Diego, an MPhil from the University of St Andrews, and a BA from University College Roosevelt in the Netherlands, where he grew up.
